Know Your H2O: The Importance of Water Quality Testing

Know Your H2O - The Importance of Water Quality Testing, Forever Home Inspection, Tulsa, Oklahoma

💦 Why should I get my water tested?

When it comes to water quality, many people assume that their local municipality is properly performing tests for contaminants such as lead, bacteria, or PFAS (“forever chemicals”). Though we like to think our government agencies always do their jobs, sadly, that is not always the case. Even if local municipalities are doing what they should, contaminants can still be coming out of your faucets. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), contaminants can enter drinking water through aging infrastructure, lead service lines, corrosion, and older plumbing systems. The EPA notes that aging plumbing materials are leading causes of water contamination.

💦 What does this mean for me?

If you live in an older home, you may need to evaluate your tap water for lead. Even if you have updated your plumbing, aging infrastructure can still be leaching contaminants into your home’s water supply.

💦 Are there other contaminants I should be aware of that could be in my water?

Several common contaminants can show up in our drinking water in addition to lead, such as other heavy metals, nitrates, nitrites, chlorine, and bromine. PFAS contamination has also become an increasing concern nationwide. With an influx of poly, PVC, pex, and all the chemicals we use on a daily basis in our homes and areas of work, recent studies by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimate that nearly half of U.S. tap water may contain detectable levels of PFAS compounds. However, identifying water contaminants does not have to be a guessing game.

💦 How can I protect myself and my family from these contaminants?

There are reliable, simple water quality tests that can be performed to determine the levels of contaminants in your water. The EPA states that testing is often the only way to determine whether harmful contaminants, such as lead, are present in drinking water because they cannot be seen, tasted, or smelled. The best preventative plan is the one made with the most information guiding it. Not all water filters are made the same, and a proper plan is not one-size-fits-all.

At Forever Home Inspection, we provide simple water quality testing as one of our ancillary services.
